Birdman in Colors

Birdman in colors, is an exhibition featuring recent artworks by the self-taught multidisciplinary artist, Semaan Khawam.

True to his self the bird motif remains an omnipresent element in his work as a representation of both his alter-ego and all-time favorite companion.
Khawam explains that the bird; which epitomizes freedom; is able to live without borders and migrate depending on the weather and in most cases chooses to go to warm places, a metaphor for evading hardships in the places and spaces the artist has worked and lived in. The latest exhibit reflects Khawam’s own journey from Lebanon to the UK.

A shift in his work becomes visible through his use of vibrant colors and whimsical scenes that incorporate several recurring themes. Departing from his more somber and earlier works his recent paintings feature a livelier tone with animal and plant motifs blended with mechanical objects inspired by both his newfound surroundings and his own imagination.

Using techniques such as scraping and layering, Khawam depicts fauna emerging from inanimate or human subjects, a reflection perhaps of the growth he has experienced since relocating to London. Other visible patterns in his body of work include objects such as scissors, music boxes, carpets and tables intertwined with humans, animals, and plants to create a disjointed yet poetic scene.

Another head turning element of this exhibit are his hybrid sculptures made from repurposed materials, a practice used often by the environmentally conscious artist.
