ZEINA ABOUL-HOSN

Based in Beirut, documentary filmmaker and ceramist Zeina Aboul-Hosn contrasts her work with film by exploring the process of creating ceramics.

She discovered ceramics after moving back to Beirut from London 10 years ago. From news rooms, war zones, and refugee crises, her attention shifted to the pottery studio. From the start of her work in ceramics, she was drawn to the touch and color of Lebanese clay, which she uses exclusively in her work.

Her exploration of Lebanese clay has pushed the boundaries of this material to its limits, creating pieces of a special character, generosity, and presence. Zeina’s ceramic objects display tension with gravity, with glaze applied experimentally each time, as representations of chance encounters between colours.
In parallel with her process of documenting reality, Zeina’s approach to ceramics can be viewed as capturing moments or feelings, rather than making them.

Her first foray into the world of art and design came in 2016 through the House of Today platform, where her ‘Moonshine’ bottle was part of the Wallpaper store curated in collaboration with House of Today. After the August 2020 blast that rocked Beirut, her ‘Together’ project was part of the exhibition to re-launch Tanit Gallery in Beirut.
Her more playful and dreamy side can be seen in her latest creations: a series of wall mounted spheres that were part of the collective exhibition ‘DEAR MOON’, at Zalfa Halabi Art Gallery in Beirut. Meanwhile she continues her filmmaking work, focusing on film editing, and cutting unique award-winning feature films and documentaries from the Arab world.
