Sarah Francis

Sarah grew up and studied in Beirut. As a filmmaker, she produced and directed her first feature film Birds of September (2013) which premiered in the CPH:Dox main competition (Copenhagen)then screened in over 40 festivals and museums (Art of the Real' Lincoln Center (NY), Stedelijk Museum (NL), Doxa (Ca), DMZ Docs (South Korea) etc..) and received several awards. Her works also include short films and videos ('Nawal's Rituals', produced by Ashkal Alwan, 2014, screened in galleries and museums). Her second feature film ‘As Above so below’/ Kama Fissamaa' Kathalika alal ard' premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2020 and is now being shown internationally. Her works have received grants from AFAC, Doha film Institute, Screen Institute Beirut, Ashkal Alwan, Al Mawred Al Thaqafi, Goethe Institute Beirut, OIF (fonds image de la francophonie), Asian Cinema Fund (South Korea) etc. She has participated in several residencies and Labs in Denmark, South Korea, The Netherlands, Jordan and Lebanon. She is currently preparing her third feature film and reconnecting with the medium of painting.
